ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

SART acknowledges the First Nations People on whose land and sea we live and work; and honours their Elders, past, present and emerging.

We also acknowledge the unique impacts of sexual violence for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and are committed to the development of culturally safe and appropriate responses.

SART acknowledges all victim-survivors of sexual assault.

We honour their lived experiences and stories, and their courage and strength.

And we recognise the profound impacts of sexual violence on individuals, their families, and communities.

UNDERSTANDING SEXUAL ASSAULT

SART acknowledges both the shared and different ways individuals, organisations and the broader community, understand the lived experiences of people who have been sexually assaulted.

The term victim-survivor is used by the SART team, to acknowledge both the impact of sexual assault, and the strength and resilience of those affected.

SART acknowledges and promotes a broad understanding of sexual violence,
and the diversity and breadth of peoples’ experiences.

While there are many words used to describe sexual violence, the term ‘sexual assault’ is used by the SART team.

SART is a multidisciplinary, interagency group of specialist professionals, established to work collaboratively alongside victim-survivors within the Townsville Region.

The SART team works together to provide integrated, coordinated, trauma and violence informed care, that ensures victim-survivors are at the centre of all that we do.

Trauma and violence informed care recognises the impact of sexual violence, and of services, and prioritises the safety, rights, choice and control of all victim-survivors.

SART best practice is immediate, specialist, integrated and sustained.

SART supports all people 14 years and older who have experienced sexual assault, recently or in the past.
